The business started as a hobby of cooking and making cakes for family and friends. Mrs Ellen Santoso, who was a piano lecturer at one of State Art Institute in Yogyakarta, often asked to cook food and cakes for campus events. The impeccable taste of Mrs. Ellen's cooking became famous among colleagues, lecturer and students. Since then, orders began to come not only from the campus, but also from the students' families.
Encouraged by the support from friends and colleagues, Mrs. Ellen started the business commercially in the 1980s. At first, it was limited to make "kue lapis" and selling them in consignment with neighbouring stalls. Soon, her business began to grow and populary known as "Kue Arya."
The name "Arya" itself came from a music store belonged by Mrs. Ellen, that later changed direction into food business. Arya, later became “Arya Snack & Food”.
After retiring as a lecturer, Mrs Ellen began to focus on managing this business with still teacing private piano. In the early 2000s, her children joined the business. Since then, Arya Snack & Food began to deal and concentrate with the catering services. Nowadays, Arya Snack & Food has two divisions, Snack Division and Food Division. The Snack Division focuses on traditional snacks (jajan pasar) and cakes. Meannwhile, the Food Division focuses on ricebox orders, catering services for private reservations, instancy, public events and gathering.
