Tiwul is a staple food,to substituterice, which made from cassava. The residents of GunungKidul or Kidul Mountains (Pacitan, Wonogiri, GunungKidul) are known to consume this type of food daily. Tiwul is made from cassava. As a staple food, its calorie content is lower than rice but is sufficient to meet as a food substitute for rice. Tiwul is believed to prevent ulcer, etc.
Tiwul was used as a staple food for some of Indonesian population during the Japanese colonialism. Tiwul may seem like NDESO (rustic) food, but not for now.
Because it isnot use as staple food anymore, Tiwul is created in various forms and developed as modern food. This, of course, makes the existence of Tiwul not to be forgotten; it is increasingly known as one of the valuable resource of Yogyakarta, especially in GunungKidul.
