Black Forest Cake (German: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte) is a type of German specialty cake that is best known in the world. This cake is actually made of chocolate sponge covered with fresh cream, chocolate shavings and cherries soaked in Kirschwasser, clear cherry schnapps typical of the Schwarzwälder region ("Black Forest"). Although known to originate from the Black Forest region, but a cake maker from Bad Godesberg, near Bonn, claimed to find the recipe in 1915
There are several theories that mention the origin of this cake.
First the chocolate shavings on the cake might symbolize the Black Forest.
Second, maybe because the name contains the word Kirschwasser which is a characteristic of the Black Forest region.
Third, some say that the name comes from the traditional Black Forest women's clothing in black with white blouses and white hats and red balls symbolizing cherries.
